Head Study 1

FEMALES

MALES

Female A:  Excellent female head.  Ears are wonderful example of natural rose, set high and of perfect size.  Eyes are set nicely apart.  Nothing is exaggerated.  Lips are tight, wrinkles on the forehead are evident though the median furrow is minimal and should be a bit more pronounced. MALE A: A nice example of a male head.  Ears set high in a nice moderate crop.  Eyes are set a bit close, and lips are jowly.  Overall a very nice moderate male head.

Female B:

Way too much on the bully side. This females ears are set a bit too high on the head.  She has a nice long ear crop. Eyes are properly shaped but are a bit close set.  The muzzle (foreface) is too short and broad especially for a female and cheeks are too pronounced.  This head would be more proper on a male dog and has amstaff type more than APBT.  The head does not look feminine.  Lips are fairly tight but appear to have some degree of jowliness. There is no median furrow evident in this photo.

MALE B:

This male has chiseled, powerful features.  The zygomatic arch is very pronounced.  Stop is a bit too deep. The muzzle is in excellent proportion. The ears are set too wide apart.  Backskull is too wide accentuated by the ear set and carriage.  There is some excess jowl but not excessive.  The eyes are set nice and wideset and are at the extreme of almond shaped. the nose is wide and open. The cheeks are of good proportion. This is a fairly good example of a male head.

Female C:

This is a wonderful feminine head.  The eyes are gorgeous as is the set on of the ears.  The lips are tight and cheeks are in nice proportion.  The muzzle is just a bit on the narrow side but not at all a negative.  We would like to see a more square shape to the muzzle.  There is a good example of a median furrow. A beautiful feminine head with correct APBT type.

MALE C:  This male has a very nice muzzle length and width. Underjaw is lacking. The ears are set a bit too high and the eyes may be a bit recessed rather than a nice open eye.  The stop has a nice depth.  The cheeks appear very nicely muscled but not overdone.

Female D:

This female looks more like a bulldog than an APBT.  This head is lacking in merit.  Muzzle extremely short,  ears set too low, jowls etc.

MALE D:

This is a moderate male head.  Nothing exaggerated, nothing severely lacking.  Eyes are standard shape, size and set.  Muzzle is of proper length but is a bit too narrow toward the nose (pointy).  We'd prefer a more square muzzle.  Lips are tight with only a hint of jowl.  Appears from the photo that the dog could use just a bit more cheek especially for a male.  Ears are set correctly.  Median furrow is evident.  Stop is nice and moderate. Overall a standard male head.

Female E:  Very much on the terrier side.  The ears appear set to high with little back skull,  The natural shape to the ears are a good rose. The stop is lacking depth, which should be moderate, here the stop is shallow and sloped.  The muzzle length appears slightly longer than the backskull but does seem to have a straight level plane.  Good tight lips.  Vaguely lacking underjaw. MALE E:  Overall a nice male head.  Ears are set too close (accentuated by how they stand of course).  The cheeks are a bit overdone for the width of the muzzle.  The muzzle could be a bit more square. Good under jaw and nice tight lips.

Female F:  This may be my favorite female head on this page would also be a very nice male head.  The eyes are nicely set.  The median furrow evident, the cheeks not overdone and free of wrinkles.  The ears are set a bit high but not bad.  The muzzle is a wonderful length and width and depth especially for a female. The stop is moderate. A bit lippy but not excessive. The forehead has a wonderful pattern of wrinkles providing that APBT expression LOL.

MALE F:

This male overall has a nice head piece. The eyes are set a bit narrow.  The muzzle is of adequate length, width and breadth for a male.  The jowls and lips are horrible as is the apparent dew lap (excess skin on the neck).  The ears are set high enough and the backskull has adequate width to the skull in proportion to the muzzle.  Overall a good head.

Female G:

Very doggy and bully female head. For a female this head lacks merit. This would be a decent but still slightly overdone head even on a male.  The eyes are set a bit wide.  The cheeks overdone.  The ears are nicely set but not carried perfectly.  The muzzle is of nice width and depth for the head proportion but appears a bit short.  The cheeks display a bit of wrinkles as does the muzzle which also has just a bit too much jowl.

MALE G:  The eyes are set wonderfully on this male.  The ears are a wonderful natural rose.  Median furrow is evident but not over done.  The muzzle is of good length width and breadth for the head.  Appears to be a bit lippy. The cheeks and muzzle show too much wrinkling.  Overall a strong correct head.

Female H:

This is a decent female head.  Lips are tight, eyes are properly shaped, but maybe a bit too close set.  The cheeks are of good proportion, The muzzle is of excellent length, width and depth for a female.  This is a nice square muzzle especially for a female. The ears are set properly (but Oh my, what a horrible ear crop!!!.  Hard to look past even though we must!)  Exceptional median furrow and lower jaw.  Cheeks are free of wrinkles as is the muzzle.  The head has a good expressive wrinkle pattern.  A wonderful female head.

MALE H:

Not a moderate structured head. Lacking in Merit. Jowls are horrible. Cheeks are tremendously over developed, Muzzle is narrow in proportion to his head.  Eyes are on the squinted (too almond) side. He has a good median furrow but the ears are set too high and the backskull narrow in proportion to the rest of the head.  Certainly impressive to Joe Public, but not at all a great head piece from a conformation standpoint.

Female I:

Oh yes! this is a very nice female head.  Would also be a good male head.  Great almond eyes, good depth of stop.  Muzzle of good length, width and breadth.  Good chiseled features.  Ears set correctly with a good crop. Adequate underjaw. Cheeks free of wrinkles and not overdone. Lips are tight.  VERY NICE!

MALE I:

Yes! A very very nice male head.  Ears are near perfect especially for natural.  Median furrow is evident but not excessive.  Lips are tight.  Muzzle a bit narrow in proportion to the head but not bad.  Cheeks are in good proportion to the skull. Eyes are of great shape and set very nicely in the head.  A great very nice head piece.

FEMALE J: This is a decent female head.  Eyes are well set and shaped.  Median furrow is evident, wrinkles are expressive.  Cheeks are prominent but not overdone.  Muzzle is of good length, width and breadth.  Lips are jowly .  Overall a moderate head piece for a female with APBT type. MALE J:
Very nice male head.  My only complaint might be what looks like a slightly short muzzle.  Nice moderate features.  Everything is there but not excessive or overdone.  Very nice head.

FEMALE K: This is not the best or worst head piece for a female.  Not too terrier and almost a good blending of bull and terrier.  The muzzle is narrow when we would prefer more box like.  The cheeks are wrinkled (probably because of the panting but this is for education purposes).  The stop is of good depth very little chiseling to the features. Has obvious breed type.

MALE K:

This head is lacking in merit.  The ears are nicely set but the backskull is narrow in proportion to the rest of the head.  The muzzle is way too short, the cheeks the epitome of overdone.  The dog does have a good underjaw but the overall structure of the head is completely the opposite end of the spectrum to female K.  This head has more bulldoggue characteristics than APBT.

FEMALE L:

Good head for an amstaff but lacking many fundamental aspects of the APBT head type. The comments from MALE K apply to this female.  This is an overly bully head lacking any blending of terrier especially for a female. This head has no feminine characteristics.  The muzzle is narrow in proportion to the rest of the head and also short.  The cheeks are much too overdone especially for a female.

MALE L:

Likely the sun is in this dogs eyes however this would be a good example of eyes that are much too squinted or overly almond.  The eyes are also set too close.  Other than this, the head does have good proportion and blends well.  A good moderate male head.

MALE M:

Very overdone head, with little chiseling of features. More like a mastiff head. Lacking in merit.   Backskull narrow in proportion and muzzle short with excess jowls.  This head is much too bully with no blending of terrier features.  This head has more mastiff reminders than APBT.

FEMALE N:

There is some blending of bull and terrier features in this female but this head would be better on a male.  The underjaw is adequate, Nothing extremely overdone but has excessive jowls.  The Muzzle is slightly short but of nice width and depth.  Cheeks are not overdone but backskull is on the narrow side.  A good male head but not feminine.

MALE N:

This is a very nice Amstaff head and also fits the UKC APBT standard to some extent.  The muzzle appears too short and there is way too much jowls.  This dog would bite himself more than his opponent, back in history, and suffer dramatic blood loss.  It is very important that lips be very tight.  The ears are set nicely, the eyes are set nicely.  The cheeks are moderately but not dramatically overdone.

FEMALE O:

This is an good head (male or female).  Some excess jowl  The eyes are almost bulging.  The muzzle is of good length but excellent width and depth.  The stop is of adequate depth and angle.  The backskull matches the proportion of the cheeks and muzzle blending together a quality head piece.  Only slightly on the male side.  If this were a male head it would be my favorite however it is a nice female head as well.

FEMALE M:

Not at all a great APBT male head. Very much an amstaff head.   Too Bully with only moderate blending of terrier. The stop is a bit too deep.  The muzzle is short.  There is also an obvious difference in the planes of the skull and muzzle. The eyes are set too wide with little zygomatic prominence.  Underjaw is adequate however and overall a moderate male head but much more Amstaff than APBT type and very little functional characteristics.

FEMALE P:

This head is feminine and only slightly on the bully side rather than the perfect blend of bull and terrier.  A good overall head structure. The underjaw is good and lips are not pendulous or excessively jowly.  The muzzle is too short but of good width and depth.  The ears are set too high and backskull appears narrow in proportion to the rest of the features.  The stop is of good moderate depth.  eyes are nicely set and shaped.  Overall a nice female head except for the length of muzzle and possibly divergent planes of the head and muzzle.

MALE P:

This is a very nice Amstaff head, and has some merit as an APBT head.  The muzzle is slightly too short and the cheeks exaggerated.  There is a good underjaw and nice median furrow.  The backskull is too wide in proportion.  I love the eyes and lips.  However this is more Amstaff type and lacks some of the functional qualities that would be required as a fighting dog.
